Large and heavy cast iron semiclad iron statue depicting Olympian goddess "Demeter". Dressed in Classical Greek robe, she holds a log in her left arm and a sheath of wheat in her right arm. She stands gracefully barefoot at 30.5 inches high in front of a stone, she is supported on an iron square plinth base.

Demeter, wife of Zeus, "goddess of the harvest", she also presides over grains and the fertility of the earth. Demeter and her daughter Persephone represent the seasons. After Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, Demeter protested and caused a drought. Zeus was able to convince Hades to free Persephone. He freed her, but before she left he tricked her to eat a honey-sweet pomegranate seed which tied her to the underworld. As a result she spent 2/3 of her time with her mother and 1/3 of her time in the underworld with Hades, which depressed Demeter. Demeter continued the drought during this time, which is our winter.
