This rare pair of Art Deco bronze panther candlesticks will make a great addition to your home, office, or an unique gift for that special person in your life. Signed on pedestal "Cherry" numbered 2/20 and 3/20, meaning that these are two out of twenty that were ever made. Each with a pair of patinated bronze stylized symmetrical crouching lean panthers posing supporting a single candle flower bud capital with pair of abstract scrolled leaves, supported on a rectangular pedestal flared at the lowest part resting on a stepped plinth base. The hot cast bronze has a beautiful burl effect patina throughout. The panther is typical for the Art Deco movement symbolizing strength, courage and power.
Art Deco was launched in the midst of the avant-garde art periods, originating in 1908 in sophisticated Paris, reaching its peak after WWI in 1925 at the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industrial Moderne. Art Deco design brings the luxury and glamour of the roaring 20's to the 21st century. With its bold geometry and use of exotic woods and metals it is exquisite creating a contrast in a traditional setting or complimenting modern and contemporary interiors.
Inspired by the work of Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916), important Italian sculptor of the early 20th century known for his bronze sculptors of exotic animals. He observed and studied many of his subjects at the Royal Zoological Gardens in Antwerp. His most well known wildlife works were of Panthers, Gazelles, Elephants and Lions often presenting them in pairs in silent communion.
