18th Century Italian Baroque Polychrome Gilt Reliquary Bust of Saint Peter. Intricately hand-carved detail highlighting St. Peter’s signature beard and receding hairline, oval-shaped cavity in the chest which once housed a sacred relic of the saint, such as a portion of a bone. It is believed that these physical objects associated with saints contained healing powers and performed miracles through God. Saint Peter, a.k.a. Simon Peter was apostle of Jesus, credited as prominent leader of the apostles and 1st Pope of the Catholic church.
