Extraordinary and unique set of four Italian Empire "Klismo" chairs. The concaved horizontal rectangular backrest slat with hand painted landscape scene surmounting a pierced vase back splat. Four delicately tapering "sabre" legs splayed outward in front and back support a comfortable seat cover in a gold velvet fabric. Klismo chairs are graceful and comfortable chairs developed by ancient Greeks with curved backrest, and tapering out-curved sabre legs resembling a sabre sword. The Romans adopted these chairs and they were later used later in English Regency and Empire styles.
